By road:

•    Private car:  The journey will take about 5 hours in total and there are some stunning views along the way.
•    Buses:  There are many bus companies offering economy and VIP buses between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. VIP buses tend to be quicker (6 hours) than economy buses (7 hours), and the journeys are more convenient.

SIEM REAP

•   Buses:  The overland section from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is approximately 204 miles (327 km). VIP buses tend to be quicker (6 hours) than economy buses (7 hours), and the journeys are more convenient.

BATTAMBANG

Different from the lavish, bustling capital Phnom Penh with a bustling scene of people, Battambang - Cambodia's second largest city wears the scenery of a peaceful and quiet village. Battamdang is located on the Mekong River and is home to many Western-style architectural works from the French colonial period.

•    Trains: From Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville takes about 7 hours. It takes about 1 hour by ferry or speedboat from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong.

For the reverse trip (Don Det to Banlung), you'll need an additional $5 for a taxi to Banlung from an intersection south of Stung Treng. It's recommended to buy a ticket from Don Det to Stung Treng and then arrange transport to Banlung.

Kampong Thom

If you’re already in Kep, it’s easy to take a tuk-tuk, taxi, minibus, or drive in 30 minutes to Kampot.

💥 Border crossing from Vietnam:
The Ha Tien border with Vietnam is about 60 km from Kampot. Easily reach it by car in  about 1.5 hours. The border, Prek Chak/Xaxia, has opened for international travelers.

Note that boats might not operate during the rainy season, and they usually don't continue to Stung Treng due to waterway conditions.  
By road: Highway No. 6 to Kampong Cham from Phnom Penh is in excellent condition. To reach Kampong Cham, take Highway No. 6 (crossing the Japanese Bridge) and follow Highway No. 7 after the roundabout in Skun. There's a scenic route on the Mekong River's eastern side for your enjoyment.

  • Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are major regions for connoisseurs of Khmer food. Rice and fish, together with an array of herbs, sauces and spices make up the Khmer typical cuisine. Curries and soup with beef, pork, poultry and seafood can be bought from street vendors. Cuisine from all over the world is also found in Cambodia with over 100 restaurants such as European, American, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese and many others, so visitors have ample choices here.
  • Drinking tap water is not advisable. Bottled drinking water is widely available for a reasonable price. Avoid tap water ice cubes.

  • Like its neighbors, Cambodia is known as a safe destination for travelers, however it always pays to be prepared. 
  • Ostentatious displays of money, jewelry, luggage, and dress can encourage the wrong type of attention. When traveling, be aware of where your luggage is at all times - in particular your hand bag, camera, smartphone, etc. Do not leave them unattended or hanging on the back of chairs in restaurants. Theft is not so common in crowded places, local markets and supermarkets but it is better to be cautious. 
 

health and medical facilities

  • A COVID-19 vaccine is required for all foreigners, and proof of vaccination must be shown upon arrival at checkpoints. Visitors are also advised to receive vaccinations against Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid and Tetanus. 
  • While some highly-regarded hospitals and clinics can be found in and around the capital of Phnom Penh, medical facilities in rural areas are few and far between. In addition to these hardships, serious medical complications are often not dealt with in Cambodia itself, but will instead require treatment abroad. We strongly recommend that you always take out medical travel insurance. 
 

tipping

  • Gratuity is a prime motivator for tour guides, as well as a major source of their income, and therefore it is commonly expected in the travel industry of Southeast Asia in general. 
  • If you are pleased with the services provided by your tour guides and drivers, then a tip for their hard work will be very much appreciated. Small gratuities are expected by hotel, boat and restaurant staff as well.
  • All suggested tips are quoted in US dollars; tips can be converted and paid in local currency or in US dollars (do not use coins, personal or traveler's checks for tips). Of course, whether you tip, how much you tip, and how you tip is always at your own discretion. 
 

WHEN TO GO & WEATHER

Cambodia enjoys a warm climate throughout the year. The dry season lasts from November to May and includes two periods: the cool season (November–February) and the hot season (March–May). The cool months are the most popular time for travelers to visit.
